Where are all the Solar Hybrid Cars ?
I was thinking about hybrid cars, specifically the Toyota Prius for some reason and why they didn't incorporate photovoltaic (PV) panels on their cars to help save both electricity costs and the environment. Because after all we should all know by now that electricity comes from a power plant, which in most cases comes from a fossil fuel. So when using electricity we aren't really helping the environment. I started looking into this seems the reason why they haven't done this is because of the large area needed by panels in order to create a decent amount of power. There ...
Carbon Capture: Clean Coal?
The UK and Norway have signed an agreement (June 3, 2009) to cooperate on the development of North Sea sub-seabed geological formations for permanent storage of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide captured from European sources. Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) is basically the burning of a fossil fuel like coal, capturing the escaping gas from the reaction and pumping into the ground for storage. The suggestion is to use old and disused oil wells such as those in the north sea. To me this does not seem like the best way forward for the UK or in fact any other country. Coal is ...

Using Plastic Cups as Fuel Could Boost Auto Performance
Mechanical engineers at Iowa State University in Ames have found a way to boost biofuel performance by up to 5% by adding waste plastic to the fuel. Polystyrene was dissolved into the biofuel at concentrations between 2 and 20%. It was found that a poly styrene concentration of 5% increased performance by roughly the same amount. However there was a... [Read more of this review]
CO2 Emission Budget set to 1 Trillion Tonnes
According to teams led by Myles Allen of the University of Oxford and Malte Meinshausen of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany we have a 50:50 chance of stopping climate change of 2°C if we limit CO2 emissions to 1 trillion tonnes. If you don’t like those odds we could limit the emissions to 750 billion tonnes and have... [Read more of this review]
Yeast and Bacterium cheaply turned into Gasoline
Christopher A. Voigt a synthetic biologist from the University of California, San Francisco. Has discovered a process to turn brewer’s yeast and a bacterium called Actinotalea fermentans into gasoline. Voigt’s team found a way to get microbes to do the hard work. Batis maritima L. (turtleweed) a plant found on the salt marshes of the southeastern... [Read more of this review]
New Research enables CO2 to be Converted to clean Biofuel
Scientists at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) have made a massive break through by converting carbon dioxide (CO2) a greenhouse gas, into methanol, a widely used clean burning biofuel. The report published in Angewandte Chemie an international chemistry journal has been described by reviewers as “very important”.... [Read more of this review]
